Mountaineers Keeping their Big Dance Chances AliveFebruary 22, 2012
The West Virginia Mountaineers are still hanging around the NCAA tournament bubble going into Wednesday night’s showdown against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The gold and blue kept their chances alive after they dominated the Pitt Panthers in what could be the last backyard brawl, 66-48. The last match-up that WVU had with the Fighting Irish came down to the last few minutes of the game. The ‘eers had the lead, but Notre Dame caught fire from the three point line and shot lights out as they captured the victory 55-51. The Irish are currently ranked 18th in the nation and a win against them is just what the Mountaineers need to boost their resume to get into the big dance. After Notre Dame, WVU’s three remaining games are against number 10th ranked Marquette, South Florida and DePaul. Winning out would certainly punch their ticket to the dance, but with the team being so inconsistent this year and catching bad breaks its hard to predict what team will show up. With a consistent leader in senior Kevin Jones leading the way the Mountaineers need another key contributor to help give the team a lift that they desperately need.
